The slipping and sliding is in full swing after our weekend ice storm. Paul experienced the brunt of it while driving all night Saturday into Sunday morning. He was in Utah Saturday for his nephew's wedding. When he called the airline about his red eye flight home (in time to take care of the kids during church while the choir performed two numbers, watch the kids sing "Tiny King," attend Rachel's piano recital and watch the kids during my final choir practice before our big Christmas performance), he discovered they had canceled his flight because of the pending weather. So in reaction to my freak-out when he called to inform me he had to stay another day, he found an earlier flight into JFK. He arrived at JFK around midnight, rented a car, drove to Newark, turned in his rental car, picked up his car and began driving home. It was treacherous and painfully slow. Wired and tired, he finally pulled into the driveway about 6:30 a.m. (it's normally a one-hour drive from Newark) only to discover they cancelled church!
It's still good Paul got home because he was able to attend Rachel's piano recital and I did go ahead with my choir practice Sunday night. By then, Paul was so tired he could hardly watch the kids or function. I felt bad for him. Anyway, I'm just glad he made it home safely. Apparently, it was quite a ride.
Speaking of ice, Spencer made a fort in the front yard in the ice pile created by the snowplow. Being at the end of the cul-de-sac does has some perks (towers of snow every storm.) He even put the American flag at the top. It was a great way for him to get out some of his energy. The ice fun continued as the kids decided to sled in the backyard yesterday. If you see the backyard in the sun, it looks just as translucent as an ice rink and it's just as slippery! Spencer tried and tried to make it up the hill by himself and just kept falling down before he got to the top. He was so frustrated and angry! It wasn't until late yesterday afternoon that he was finally able to sled with Rachel's help. They did a lot of falling going up the hill but they had a great time going down it because the sleds went forever. The only problem was that the sleds went so far that they hit the back fence. I reminded the kids to roll off before the fence but when they did, they kept sliding without a sled because it's a solid sheet of ice. Spencer did hit the fence once but he's okay. They had so much fun yesterday that the two of them are heading out the door right now to try it again.
